Waterbirth Basics (PDF) – though denser than your average article or FAQ, if you are interested in having a waterbirth, this well-researched and referenced article by Barbara Harper, first published in Midwifery Today magazine (Summer 2000), is a must-read.
The water made me so completely connected to my body and my baby. The water held me and cradled me so that I could surrender more completely to this amazing and wonderful grace that was happening to me. This is the way that God intended childbirth to be.
— Cynthia (quoted in Waterbirth Basics)
Waterbirth International – this reknowned organization was started by Barbara Harper, RN and author of Gentle Birth Choices. She has been researching waterbirth since 1983. The website has loads of information, photos, birth stories, a referral service and will help you if you want to get your hospital to allow waterbirths.
I highly recommend that you check out at least one video on waterbirth – the beauty of waterbirth really needs to be seen to be believed. Often these can be borrowed from your midwife, childbirth educator or library. They can also be ordered online from most providers of waterbirth supplies including Waterbirth International.
